Is Bariatric Surgery Right for You?

By Greg Mauro Bariatrics is the branch of medicine which deals with obesity: the causes, prevention and treatment of. The goal is to be able to supply overweight people with diet and nutrition programs, exercises and lifestyle change recommendations to help keep their weight down. When necessary, appetite suppressants and other medications may be prescribed. Yet one of the most requested treatments is bariatric surgery. There are several different types of weight-loss procedures available with the most popular being Roux-en-Y surgery, commonly known as stomach stapling. But before deciding if you want to proceed with a weigh-loss operation, there are many factors to discuss with your doctor. For starters, there is a difference between being overweight and suffering from obesity. Being overweight is considered having a total body weight over the recommended for ideal health. It is not necessarily unhealthy, though it is becoming a trend in America. Obesity is much more severe and can lead to serious health problems. You cannot just walk in and demand to have any type of weight-loss procedure done to you; there are certain qualifications. The basic criteria are as follows: – Must have a body-weight 100lbs. or more over your ideal body weight. – Must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater that 40 or greater than 35 with medical complications directly resulting from your weight. – Must have a attempted to try non-surgical options such as supervised diets and exercise programs. – No indication of psychological disorder or alcohol abuse. One needs to also take into consideration the cost of such a procedure. The different operations vary in price, ranging roughly from $10,000 – $40,000. Depending on how necessary the surgery is (determined on your initial visit to your doctor) your insurance plan may or may not cover some of the costs. Costs associated with such procedures include not only the surgery itself, but post-operation costs and check-ups. With the costs and risks of such surgery, the decision to get the operation should not be made lightly. It is designed for those whose weight causes a risk to their health and have no other option. If you are looking at bariatric surgery as a quick fix, or because you dont want to put in the work to get thin, please reconsider. Teen Depression

By Milos Pesic Everyone feels down at some point. Its normal to feel the blues. But if you are sad most of the time and the feeling is starting to affect your grades, relationships, and your behavior in many ways, then the problem may be more than just the blues. It may be teen depression, a serious illness that approximately four out of a hundred teenagers suffer through each year. How do you when youre depressed? Or when a friend might be depressed? The signs of depression are numerous that there is usually no hard and fast rule to identifying all the symptoms of teen depression. But the most important thing to remember is that there are generally two types of teen depression. Under the first type, you will find two other types of depression which vary only in their intensity major depression or clinical depression (severe) and dysthymia or chronic depression (moderate but lasts for a longer period). The second type of teen depression is referred to as bipolar depression, the depressive state of manic-depressive disorder, a condition wherein the subject suffers periodic bouts of mania or elevated mood and depression where the subject is often too low in energy that he would not be able to move. It would take a health professional to distinguish the particular type of teen depression. It is advisable therefore that you consult professional help when you notice any of the following signs of teen depression: * Persistent feelings of sadness (You cry a lot and for no apparent reason) * Persistent feelings of guilt, again, for no real reason (You feel like you are no good or are worthless) * Loss of confidence or low self-esteem * You feel as though life is meaningless and that nothing good will ever come out of it. * You always seem to be exhausted and you do not feel like doing the things that you used to enjoy a lot, like music, sports, being with friends, or going out. Most of the time, you just want to be left alone. * You keep getting distracted and you cant seem to concentrate. You also forget things, or you do things without any recollection of doing them. * Little things make you lose your temper. You get irritated very easily, or you overreact. * Your sleep pattern changes. Either you sleep more or you sleep less or you cant seem to fall asleep or stay asleep. You wake up too early most mornings and have difficulty falling back to sleep. Insomnia (too little sleep) or hyposomnia (too much sleep) sets in. * Your eating habits also change. You have lost your appetite or you eat a lot more. Weight gain or weight loss is drastic. * You think about death, or feel like you are dying, or you have thoughts about committing suicide, whether or not you have the energy to actually harm yourself. Rockie’s Story – Why I Am A Chiropractor

By Tim Langley If my chiropractic story were all I had to tell you, I probably wouldnt be a chiropractor today. Instead, Id probably be just another satisfied customer who gets adjusted regularly. I injured my back lifting weights for high school football and suffered for 20 years. Eventually, the pain got so bad that I was even willing to consider surgery or chiropractic. At the time, both options were equally as scary to me. Then, I met a chiropractor and started getting adjusted. The results were incredible and Ive been without a back problem ever since. In fact, Ive not taken even an aspirin for over 17 years. However, Im a chiropractor today because of a little girl named Rockie. I first met Rockie when she was eight years old. At that time, Rockie was having 15-20 grand mal seizures EVERY day and taking over a dozen different prescription drugs for the seizures, ADD/ADHD, emotional and a host of other problems. In fact, Rockies problems had been so bad that her doctors had recommended that she be institutionalized so her mom could live a normal life without being burdened by a child like hers. You see, the doctors said that Rockie would never be like normal kids, unable to get along in social settings or do routine physical tasks, even ride a bicycle. Needless to say, Rockies mom said No!” to that advice declaring that her little girl was a gift from God and responsibility that she would willingly face. Rockies first visit to the chiropractor was with her babysitters family. The babysitter made weekly visits to their chiropractor for wellness adjustments. Seemingly unable (or unwilling) to cope with another doctor, Rockie would literally curl up in a corner and watch as all her young friends would get adjusted. One day, the chiropractor got a call from Rockies mom saying that Rockie wanted to get adjusted and how or why would anyone adjust a child, anyway? Her little girl didnt have any back pain. Rockies mom was told simply that adjustments help take stress off the nervous system and that stress on the nervous system can have adverse effects on the body and how it expresses health. During the case history, her mom revealed that Rockie had an extremely difficult delivery at birth and had had problems from the beginning. Over the years, Rockies condition steadily improved. Eventually, she ended up in the National Honor Society, on her high school basketball team and joining a local archery club. The long and short of the story is that Rockie has just finished college after receiving a full academic and is on her way to an advanced degree. Not only can Rockie ride a bicycle, she drove back and forth between Marietta, GA and Columbia, SC every week for four years. She also competes internationally in archery at the championship level. Not only has Rockie overcome incredible odds, she no longer has seizures and takes no more prescription drugs. No. Rockie is not like normal kids, shes incredible! When asked what chiropractic did for Rockie, her mom says that more than relief from the seizures, learning disabilities and other diagnoses, the chiropractor was the FIRST and ONLY doctor who offered even a sliver of HOPE for her little girl. After knowing Rockie for several years and having watched her progress, I heard a story of another little girl suffering from seizures. Sadly, this little girl ended up having a hemispherctomy (an experimental procedure where HALF of the brain is removed) to relieve her symptoms. The parents were told that a chiropractor should not adjust their daughter. At the time, my first child was only 15 months old. Imagining that happening to my child broke my heart. Knowing what potential is designed and available for every living person, I decided that I would dedicate my life to letting people know there is always hope of improving their health and their life. Every day I awaken, I give thanks that I met Rockie and the difference she has made in so many lives. Dr. Tim Langley is a family chiropractor in Cobb County, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. They Won’t Let Me Babysit! How To Break The Child / Parent Deadlock

By Richard C Myers OK kids, lets start with you. You want to babysit. You want it more than anything and your parents just wont let you. It seems so unfair, right? They dont get that you can be mature and responsible. Theyre treating you like a baby and youve had enough! Hey Mom and Dad its a scary time, isnt it? You little baby is getting so grown-up in some ways. But in many other areas they still have a loooong way to go! They dont seem to get what a responsible job babysitting is and youre frightened for them. What if they hit a situation they cant deal with? Theres no way youre going to put them in that positionyet. Time Out! Everyone has to give and take here so that a solution may be reached. Lets look at this from both sides. Child / Teen If you want your parents to agree to what youre asking for you have to know their needs first. Why are they saying no did you ever ask them without throwing a fit? The chances are that they are worried for you. They understand how much responsibility a babysitter takes on. Are you ready for that responsibility? Really? OK – How would you deal with the following babysitting situations? A child wont stop crying A child gets sick and needs a bath and their soiled bed changing A child cuts himself and needs sutures. His siblings are asleep upstairs A child starts to choke on a peanut See this is why your parents worry. If youre not able to deal with all of thoseand more, then youre not ready. So What Can I Do To Learn These Things Show your parents that you understand the job by wanting to learn how to do it properly. There are DVD courses available ask them to buy you one for Christmas or a birthday. In the meantime You wont get anywhere without communicating properly. Slamming doors is not the way to impress them that youre mature enough to babysit. You know those chores they keep asking you to do? Do them demonstrate that you can be disciplined and work. And then do them without being asked that shows initiative. It might be dull but so is a lot of work do you want this or not? Parents Make time to discuss why you are saying no. It wont stop your child wanting to babysit it just makes them crazy. If they know why youre refusing, it gives them a chance to do something about it. Kids can reason if they know what theyre up against. Communication is key. Kids do want to talk to you, despite the way they behave. Take the time to get to know your kids and let them know you relationships are two-way. Support them if they really want this, help them to learn what they need to know. Money Is Important – Whether You Agree Or Not

By Cheriyan Thankachen When I talk to people about having multiple income streams, they say why are you so money minded. Having multiple sources of income is a topic which is definitely important, to be known and the need understood. How many times we have heard people say the following things: 1. Money, isn’t everything. 2. You should be satisfied with whatever money you. 3. Don’t be so money minded. 4. I don’t care about money. 5. Money is not important. and more phrases. Well, with due importance to their thoughts, money might not be important for them. But, I surely bet, money is important to their milkman, money is important to their landlord, money is important to their banks if they have taken loans, money is important to the person who holds their mortgage, it is important when you go to a hospital. I can go along giving more examples. You may not need money but, almost every individual who is connected to you needs money. As a matter of fact, money is important to any individual living in a civilized city. Please do not try to cheat yourself by knowingly denying its importance. Nothing can take the place of money in the area where it is required. Therefore, to argue that it is not important is just illogical and meaningless. The simple truth of you getting up in the morning and going to work is because money is important. I come across individuals saying, “Its all about satisfaction and not money”. I fully agree if you are doing social service else you will show your displeasure immediately. If satisfaction is important employers will hire only satisfied employees and not give money. Some people say money is not important just because they are unable to earn money or they say someone with more money is lucky. Luck does play a role in your financial success, it is never sufficient in and off itself. Some even go ahead and say too much money is bad. Money is important it is neither good nor bad. It depends on what you do with it. There are no free rides in the world, money is an effect which is always earned with effort and hard work. So, next time you get an opportunity to earn, go ahead and create another income stream. Legal Tips For Dog Owners

By Kum Martin Owning a dog can exposure you to significant legal liabilities. You are responsible for the dog if it commits property damage or injures someone, even if the injury wasnt caused by a bite. You are exempt from liability if the person bitten was on your property as a trespasser, if they were a veterinarian treating the dog, if they provoked the animal or if they were committing a felony at the time. If not, you will be responsible for their medical bills, loss of wages from being unable to work, psychological counseling, and be generally expected to compensate for the changes to the victims life as a result of their contact with your dog. As these expenses can top hundreds of thousands of dollars, dog owners should consider getting dog owners insurance, especially if the possess a particularly surly breed. Many states have a first bite rule stemming from English common law. This law says that an owner is not responsible for the first time his animal attacks someone, since he could have no previous knowledge of the animals dangerousness and therefore cannot be expected to have taken measures to protect people from it. In these states, the owner is strictly liable for subsequent attacks. Dog owners may also protect themselves by informing guests of the animals dangerous propensities. Simply saying be careful, he bites, may save a dog owner from a fortune in liabilities. Even a general reputation for viciousness may be enough to protect you, so dont feel bad about bragging of your dogs fighting prowess. How Much Baggage Should You Check-In?

By George Siegal At the airport some airlines let you check two bags, some three, and either one or two carry on items. And theres always a weight penalty. In relationships there arent as many check-in rules, you pretty much bring your bags with you and make up the rules as you go along. I define baggage as things you have going in your life such as kids, ex-spouses, job problems, a criminal record. The question is how much of that do you bring with you to the new relationship, and what should you leave behind? People who dated me probably thought I was carrying way to many bags, and when I met someone who went on and on about their ex and how theyve been screwed over by the world it made me want to RUN. So rather than get a weight penalty for two much baggage I think its a great idea to have a neutral person to talk to, either a counselor or psychologist, a third party to unload all that baggage. Youre paying them; so let them unburden you and your problems. Then when you are out meeting people youve left all those bags at home. Naturally as you are getting to know someone your past will come up. But if youve gotten you head clear to the point of dealing with your baggage it can only help the new relationship. Think Right, And Lose Weight Now

By Roy Miller What’s the most important step toward losing weight? No, it’s not what you eat, although that’s important. No, it’s not exercising, although that’s a critical component of your plan. No, it’s not the system you buy, although a system can be tremendously helpful. The most important step is deciding to lose weight. Most people never do that. They wish they could lose weight, or they long to lose weight, or they’re angry about being fat, or they get mad about not being able to lose weight. But they never make a firm commitment to achieving a reasonable target weight. Any major life achievement begins with a decision (if it happens by accident, did you really achieve anything?) You have to decide to be thin. You know you’ve really decided when you don’t quit. If you quit, you never really committed in the first place. That might be hard to hear, but it’s the truth. Suppose your most cherished person in the world was trapped in a burning building. Nobody else is around. You save this person, or this person burns to death, and you’ll hear the screaming. Are you going in to save that person? You bet, and you’ll come out with that person or die trying. That, my friend, is commitment. If you’re not deathly committed to your weight loss goals, you won’t achieve them.
